Research Great Brands Before Hitting the Thrift

There’s nothing worse than going into a big thrift store all excited, only to feel lost about what to find. But you can avoid that by doing some research before you go. You might think about watching “What Sold” or “Thrift Haul” videos on YouTube, which can be somewhat helpful. But guess what? There’s an even better and more precise way to prepare.

The Power of Brand

Let’s talk more about why brands matter when you’re selling stuff on Poshmark. You see, brands are like a stamp of quality and popularity. They spend tons of money to make people love and recognize their name. When you find items from these popular and trusted brands, they’re more likely to sell for a good price. So, we’re going to teach you how to find these special brands that can help you make more money on Poshmark. It’s like having a secret weapon in your thrift store treasure hunt!

How to Find Good Brands

Let’s head over to the official Poshmark website to conduct our research of what sells on Poshmark.

Filters for Researching What Sells on Poshmark

Now, how you do this can be different based on where you get your items. If you buy secondhand things from thrift stores, you’ll usually compare them to other used items on Poshmark. But if you get brand-new items with tags (NWT) from liquidation, it’s a good idea to look at both used items and new ones that have sold to understand how much they sell for and how popular they are.

In this example, we’re focusing on doing brand research before you even step foot inside the thrift store. Don’t worry; we’ll cover how to research items when you’re actually at the thrift store in a future blog post. For now, let’s get you prepared with some smart brand knowledge!

Let's Start Researching

First, let’s narrow down our focus to a specific category that you either sell the most or enjoy thrifting the most. For our example, we’ll pick women’s shoes. To do this, follow these steps:

1. On Poshmark’s website, hover over the “Women” section.
2. Click on “Shop All Women’s Shoes.”

Don't Fall for This Trick

Now, as we dive into researching women’s shoes on Poshmark, keep these important things in mind:

  • Poshmark has a sneaky way of auto-saving your personal sizes to give you better search results, as if you’re shopping for yourself. But remember, in this case, we’re not shopping for us; we’re checking how well items might sell for others. So, it’s essential to either remove your sizes or clear that filter in your search.

They might apply it after each filter update, so always double-check to ensure your search is as accurate as possible. It can be a bit annoying, but it’s worth the extra effort!

Filtering by Ideal Price

When you’re searching for brands to sell, think about the price range you’re comfortable with. For example, if you buy things at Goodwill for around $8 to $12 and want to sell them for about $30 to make a profit, you should focus on brands that usually sell for $30 or more. This way, you’re more likely to find items that can make you the money you want when you sell them. It’s like having a plan to find the best stuff for your business!

Checking Sold Items for Brands

Next, we want to focus on sold items. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Go to the “Availability” section.
  2. Click on “Sold Items.”

But be careful! Check to make sure Poshmark didn’t automatically add a size filter. If they did, remove it. Now, you’ll see sold shoes that went for over $30.

To figure out which items sold the quickest after being listed for $30 or more, you can use the “Sort By” option and choose “Just In.” This way, you’ll spot the items that sold really fast once they were listed at or above the $30 mark. It’s like finding the hottest deals in town!

Excellent Brand Research

Now that we’ve filtered for shoes in every size and found the ones that sold quickly for over $30, it’s time to gather some valuable information. Here’s what we’ve discovered:

  1. Clove: We noticed a pair of Clove sneakers sold for $49. So, keep an eye out for Clove brand shoes; they seem to do well.

  2. Hoka: There were a few pairs of sneakers from the brand Hoka that sold for prices ranging from $95 to $138. That’s a clear sign that Hoka shoes are in demand, so make sure to look for them.

  3. Birkenstock: We spotted a pair of Birkenstocks. Birkenstock is a brand worth exploring as well.

  4. Taos: There’s also a brand called Taos, which you might not have heard of before. But a pair of Taos shoes sold for an impressive $275! So, definitely keep an eye out for Taos brand shoes.

With this information, you’ve got some key brands to watch out for during your thrift store treasure hunts. These brands have shown they can fetch good prices, and now you’re in the know!

Why This Method Sucks - And Why Items Take Forever to Sell

The challenge with this method is that Poshmark doesn’t give us a lot of information to work with. But here’s a super helpful trick to be more certain if an item will sell and get a real percentage chance of how likely it is to sell: use eBay before listing on Poshmark.

Here’s how it works: I’ve personally discovered that while I can often get higher prices for items on Poshmark, eBay is pretty accurate when it comes to providing a “sell through rate,” which tells us how likely an item is to sell. Here’s what you do:

1. Go to eBay and type in some basic info about your item, like “Birkenstock black sandals.”
2. See how many listings for that item are currently available on eBay.
3. Now, use the filter to show only the items that have already been sold.
4. To find the sell-through rate, divide the number of items that sold by the total number of items available for sale.
5. Then, multiply this number by 100. This will give you the sell-through rate.

This trick helps you get a better idea of how likely your item is to sell, making your selling strategy on Poshmark even smarter!

Here is an eBay search for “birkenstock black sandals,” with 5,400+ results available.

Now let’s filter to find solds by clicking the sold items box (it defaults to completed listings too).

You can see 3,700+ sold on eBay in the last 90 days.

–>  3,700/5,400*100 = about 68% sell through rate (or a 68% chance of selling within 90 days).

The Easy & Quick Way

All the steps we talked about can take quite a bit of time. But here’s a nifty trick: PoshPop’s closet scanning feature can make things a whole lot easier. It’s like a shortcut to success!

Here’s how it works: First, go to PoshPop, but remember, you’ll need the premium subscription for this tool. Once you’re there, find someone’s closet on Poshmark that you think is doing really well.

Now, here’s the fun part: Click on “Estimate Closet Revenue” in PoshPop. This tool will quickly scan their closet and tell you how much they’ve made from sales in the past 30 days.

For example, I’m aiming for $5,000 or more in sales every month. So, I’m not just looking at closets that are doing okay. I’m setting my sights on closets making $10,000 or even $20,000 because that’s where I want to be.

Once you find a closet that matches your money goals, explore it like a treasure hunt. Pay attention to how they take pictures of their stuff, read their item titles and descriptions, and see what kinds of things and brands they’re selling, both now and in the past.

It’s like having a secret recipe for success, and you can learn a ton from these successful sellers to help you reach your goals on Poshmark without all the extra work!

FAQs

I strongly believe that on Poshmark, nearly anything can find a buyer, no matter the brand. The key factors that really count are the item’s condition, the price you set, and the time it takes to sell.

Of course, if we’re using Poshmark to make money, we want items that not only sell for a good amount but also sell quickly. That’s why we’re focusing on what items have a fast turnaround on Poshmark. It’s all about making the most money in the shortest time possible!

I find successful Poshmark closets by following the tips we discussed in this blog post about what’s selling on Poshmark. However, my approach differs in that I don’t just focus on the brands or items that are selling; instead, I closely examine the people who are selling them. This method has led me to discover many successful Poshers!

I really like watching YouTube videos where Poshmark users share what they’ve sold on Poshmark. I also enjoy checking out videos about what’s sold on eBay and haul videos for items to resell on Poshmark.

But here’s a word of caution: while these videos are fun and informative, it’s important not to rely solely on them. Always make sure to double-check the comps (comparable listings) to ensure you’re making informed decisions when buying and selling. Happy watching and reselling!
